WARM SPRINGS WELLNESS AND FITNESS PROGRAM PROMOTES HEALTHY LIFESTYLEServicing the Luling and Surrounding Communities for Individuals 16 to 116 Years Old In keeping with the commitment to offer services that benefit the community, the Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling is proud to announce the addition of the Warm Springs Wellness and Fitness Program. The goal of the Warm Springs Wellness and Fitness Program is to help individuals increase their activity level and promote healthy habits. The ongoing eight week sessions have included circuit training to promote strength and endurance and Tai Chi to improve strength and balance. Water aerobics to promote strength, balance and endurance will be added to the Wellness and Fitness class offerings in July. "Through this program, individuals in the community have access to an individualized program that includes fitness training and nutritional services supervised by knowledgeable Warm Springs professionals," said Tonya Huston, Physical Therapist and Warm Springs Director of Rehabilitation Services. "We are constantly bombarded with information about obesity and the risk factors associated with it such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and other chronic health problems. Warm Springs offers a setting within our hospital where individuals can participate in physical activity at their level, thereby preventing health problems due to the absence of activity and poor nutrition." As adults age many allow themselves to become less active, therefore the body begins to literally deteriorate from lack of use. Bones start to lose density when they are not challenged increasing the chance for sickness to set in. When individuals are out of shape even a minor illness can have long term debilitating effects. "By living a healthier lifestyle, additional or lengthy hospital stays are minimized," said Brenda Miles, Administrator Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling. "The opportunity to socialize through participation in the Warm Springs Wellness and Fitness Program also creates a support group that motivates and challenges them to continue with the program." "We have observed that our participants have seen a noticeable weight loss, improved strength and balance, and have experienced an increase in their energy level by participating in the program," said Huston. "Overall, the Warm Springs Wellness and Fitness Program provides an opportunity for our participants to live quality, healthy lifestyles." Program participant Russel Matthews praises the program, saying, "The Wellness and Fitness program has far exceeded my expectations. There are Warm Spring's professionals on hand to guide me in the proper use of each piece of equipment, with special advice on particular needs, and in just 6 weeks I have lost 15 pounds, two inches in my waist, and have more energy than I have experienced in many years." The Warm Springs Wellness and Fitness Program currently offers 4 circuit training classes (meeting twice weekly) and a weekly Tai Chi class in 8-week evening sessions. The next 8-week session of classes will begin July 12th with the addition of a water aerobics class (twice weekly). For more information or to sign up for the next 8-week session starting in July, please call Tonya Huston at the Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling, 830-875-8450. |
