SHINER HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE RECOGNIZED FOR MIRACULOUS RECOVERYRebecca Proschko Inducted into the Warm Springs Wall of Fame Brain injury survivor Rebecca Proschko was inducted into the Warm Springs Wall of Fame on February 10, 2005. The Warm Springs Wall of Fame recognizes those patients who have had an exceptional recovery from a debilitating injury, illness or surgery. In April 2004, Proschko was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left her clinging to life. After six weeks in a comatose state, Proschko awoke to face severe disabilities that impeded her ability to walk, talk and eat. Over the past 10 months, Proschko received intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy at the Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling and Victoria Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital. The focus of her therapy was on improving her ability to perform daily living skills. Her dedication to therapy was the driving force behind her success at regaining independence after her tragic, almost fatal accident. "Throughout her rehabilitation, Becca maintained a wonderful and positive attitude," said Steve Spivey, physical therapists at the Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling. "Patients like Becca inspire us to give our best everyday and she is a constant reminder of the success that comes out of hard work and determination." Through the use of physical, occupational and speech therapy and rehabilitation nursing, Warm Springs staff help patients develop skills necessary to return to a familiar lifestyle by increasing independence and improving their physical and cognitive abilities. "This is our eighth Wall of Fame celebration through which we recognize and honor those individuals who have gone beyond their expected recovery and touched those around them," said Brenda Miles, Warm Springs Specialty Hospital at Luling. "Every individual on the Wall of Fame is an example of the incredible human spirit they posses to survive and overcome adversity." A 1997 graduate from Shiner High School, Proschko feels honored to receive the recognition. "I have a whole new outlook on life. My friends want to see me get back to my old self, but I will never be that same person again." Rebecca continues to receive speech therapy at the Victoria Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital where she also participates in the Maintenance Program. The Maintenance Program offers patients the opportunity to continue working on their rehabilitation goals to ensure that they dont lose the skills or strength obtained through therapy. "She has come a long way since her accident and she still has some things that need to be worked on, but she sets her goals and works towards accomplishing them," said Mary Proschko, Rebeccas mother. "I dont think anyone, including the therapists, realized that she could come this far in her recovery." Warm Springs Rehabilitation System has been caring for Texans for over 65 years to help them regain pride and independence that are vital to a productive and satisfying life. Warms Springs offers comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services in San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Victoria and long-term acute care inpatient services in Luling.
