Why Lung Health Matters in New Hampshire

Tobacco Use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., killing 2 out of 3 users. For every tobacco-related death, 20 more Americans live with serious tobacco-related illnesses. In New Hampshire, tobacco use claims about 1,900 lives annually and costs over $730 million in healthcare. Secondhand smoke is also harmful—there is no safe level of exposure.

Vaping & E-Cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among youth for the 10th year in a row (NYTS 2023). These products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can disrupt brain development in teens.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. It affects roughly 1 in 15 New Hampshire adults, many of whom are undiagnosed. Awareness and early intervention remain low.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions. New Hampshire has one of the highest adult asthma rates in the country, with thousands of new diagnoses each year. Over one-third of children with asthma live in homes that are not tobacco-free.

Air Quality, indoor and outdoor, directly affects lung health. Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, where pollutant levels can be 2–5 times higher than outside. Triggers like smoke, mold, dust mites, and pet dander can worsen asthma and other lung diseases.

Breathe New Hampshire Fills a Need

We are New Hampshire's only state-wide lung health organization focused on the unique needs of the Granite State.

We fill an important need in our state's public health system as New Hampshire has a limited public health infrastructure compared to many other states.

We are invested solely in the lung health of New Hampshire people, and our financial support stays local to benefit those who live and breathe here.

We collaborate with and value the perspectives of a diverse group of stakeholders, including individuals living with lung conditions and their family members, caregivers, healthcare providers, volunteers, community partners, and others.

We are a local resource for valuable and user-friendly health information, serving New Hampshire schools, families, businesses, and community leaders.

We involve and empower individuals living with lung conditions, as well as their caregivers and families. We are often the only voice for those impacted by breathing conditions in New Hampshire.

We engage and support youth advocates through education, training and organizing opportunities for action.
